There is increased competition in the workplace as well as heightened demand for workplace-ready graduates from both employers and government. ALES Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) programs meet those needs by equipping students with practical, real-world experience.

The ALES Work-Integrated Learning Opportunities Endowment Fund supports students through experiential learning including exchange programs, Study Abroad, practicums, internships and other hands-on experiences.

Through support from donors, students can participate in these programs without the burden of additional costs. Expenses such as transportation, accommodation, and bio-security equipment are covered, allowing students to fully engage in learning and exploration within their chosen fields.

Graduates who participate in WIL programs emerge career-ready, often gaining improved transferable skills, a clearer professional identity and higher employment rates after graduation. Many ALES agricultural students come from urban backgrounds, so connecting them with rural industry roles is essential to help them understand and experience the skills these careers require.

One example is the Mini-Internship Program which gives students hands-on work, farm and production experience. This three-day immersive program introduces mostly urban students to the realities of agriculture, environmental and food production systems – building their confidence and preparing them for meaningful careers in these vital sectors.
