Life has a way of throwing curve balls at you and can often get in the way of students being able to focus on their academics. From mental health to paying the rent, academic issues to accommodation concerns, the Office of Advocacy & Wellbeing (OAW) is there when students and residents need a helping hand.

Knowing that someone’s always got their back in the OAW makes any problem easier to deal with. The OAW is a “safe space” where learners can get help no matter what the challenge.

The OAW is also at 'arm's-length' from the Faculty’s academic offices, allowing them to fully advocate for learners— another key factor in building trust and providing a safe space.

The OAW helps learners deal with a wide range of problems. These might include:

* academic appeals and support
* conflict resolution
* disability and accommodation
* physical illness
* personal or family crises
* mental health
* harassment and intimidation
* trouble with a partner
* substance abuse
* legal trouble
* financial difficulties (awards/bursaries and emergency funding)
* career advice
* other issues

The OAW supports all learners in the Faculty. This includes all five undergraduate programs (Medicine, Dentistry, Dental Hygiene, Medical Laboratory Science, and Radiation Therapy), as well as many MSc & PhD students studying throughout the Faculty. 

There’s also another big group of learners the OAW helps: medical residents. Despite all the education and experience already under their belts, MD residents can face many problems and life challenges that are different from other learners.

These are challenging programs that demand a lot, and with your support, the OAW will be there when students need it.
