This Giving Day, the Faculty of Law is raising funds via the Dean’s Law Fund to support a variety of meaningful experiential learning opportunities for law students through legal clinics, placements, the mooting program, and other offerings. 

Through the Faculty’s [Entrepreneurial Law Clinic](https://www.ualberta.ca/en/law/faculty-and-research/entlc/index.html) led by Professor Faith Majekolagbe (and founded by [Digital Law and Innovation Society](https://www.ualberta.ca/en/law/campus-life/student-groups/index.html)), students have the opportunity to working directly with clients, honing their practical skills while also providing free legal support to startups (both for-profit and non-profit), giving early-stage entrepreneurs the ability to launch their ideas to new heights. 

Or, students may get the chance to travel nationally or even internationally to compete against other law students in a variety of [moots](https://www.ualberta.ca/en/law/campus-life/moot.html) so they can sharpen their advocacy skills and build their confidence with the support of one-on-one coaching and mentorship from the legal community. Law students now participate in more than 20 different moots annually in a variety of subject areas from health law to Indigenous law to constitutional law, and more. 

“Mooting builds a skillset that is useful whether or not you become a litigator,” says Emma Stirling, ‘24 JD. “When I started, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it and it ended up being the most important part of my law school career. Mooting gave me confidence that I didn’t know I had, and showed me what I was capable of.”  

Whether through legal clinics, the mooting program, land-based learning of Indigenous laws in the Wahkohtowin Intensive: Miyo-wîchêtowin Principles and Practice course, or an immersive experience at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre through the Ocean’s Law and Policy course, students will be able to discover their passion areas and set the foundation for successful future careers in the legal profession. 

This fund will also allow the faculty to continue to explore ways to expand the depth and breadth of meaningful experiential learning offerings for law students under the direction of our new Experiential Learning Program Lead, Allison Fieldberg. 

“The experiential learning program plays a significant role in the JD curriculum, while also addressing barriers to legal services in Alberta,” says Fiona Kelly, dean of Law. “We are very proud of what we offer, but we know so much more can be done.
